Sri Lanka will test their new look Under-19 team dominated by outstation cricketers ahead of next years Youth World Cup when they meet Australia, West Indies and hosts India in a quadrangular tournament in Visakhapatnam in Indian.
Sri Lanka Under-19 led by former Maris Stella College cricketer Angelo Jayasinghe will meet their counterparts from September 27 to October 07.
This will be the first tour abroad for a majority of cricketers and for a few a new beginning after their last engagement with the Sri Lanka Under-19 ended on a bad note. There were discipline issues against a couple of cricketers when they played against England Under-19 here early this year.
The selectors have placed their hopes on rooky paceman Dilshan Danushka of Maliyadeva College who was sent to India to attend the MRF fast bowling academy headed by Dennis Lilllee. Danushka joins experienced speedster de Mel who also attended the clinic.
The team selected for the tour includes several cricketers who have not played Schools Cricket in Division I category but according to team officials they have done enough in the Under-23 Inter Club tournaments and have fared well during practice matches to win places. Pullina Taranga of Devananda College, Ambalangoda, Tharindu Kaushal of Devapathiraja College, Ratgama and Lahiru Madushanka of St. Thomas’ College, Matale are the notable inclusions from lower division schools.
From Colombo based schools Royal paceman Gaurav Deva is the latest inclusion while St. Peter’s College opening batsman Shehan Fernando has won his due place after being sidelined for several series before.
Lasith Abeyratne and Duleeka Tissakuttige who had exposure against England Under-19 this year are bringing experience to the batting line up with skipper Angelo Jayasinghe, while Saranga Rajaguru and Amila Aponso brings experience to the spin department.
Sri Lanka Under-19 is scheduled to leave for India on September 24.
